The islands.

Day 7
13th Jan 2008

Woke up at 7am today. Me, Wanru, Keesian and Wooikuan went to the port. We are going to Manukan Island, an island near Kota Kinabalu.

I guessed Keesian was the most excited one, as he kept talking about snorkeling since a few days ago. Would you believe it? He has never tried snorkeling before, in his life.

We went to the island with speed boat. The good things about snorkeling here was, we could do whatever we like, go whereever we want, as long as within the safety boundary. No tour, no guide, own time, own target.

After we have our lunch there on the beach, we went snorkeling. It was pretty amazing when we are at the deeper sea. Craps, corals, and a lot of colourful fishes, were what we saw in the sea. We even spot a small stingray and a craps actually climbed on Keesian's shoulder. Hahaha.

Done snorkelling, the swimming pro, Keesian, taught Wooikuan how to swim and we had a lot fun laughing at them.

We went back to the port at 4pm. In the same time, Jun and Yiyeung just came back from Brunei. After a short rest, Wooikuan lead us to the market nearby to taste some local food. In the night time, Wooikuan's parents treated us dinner again.

Before we sleep, Keesian took out the precious he bought from Labuan - Vodka. The night contained only Vodka, until we fall asleep without noticed.

Keesian, with his famous pose again.

4 of us, wonder why Keesian looks so funny.

The seperation in Sabah.

Day 6
12th Jan 2008

Woke up in 7 in the morning. The apartment left me and Lynn. We have decided to have our own target today.

Jun and YiYeung fulfilled their dream of travel to Brunei. Wanru, KeeSian and Wooikuan ran off to Pulau Labuan early in the morning. I will stay in Kota Kinabalu Town with Lynn, because she was going back home at the day's evening. I was wearing the responsibility of sending her to the Airport.

At 10, we went to the shopping mall once again, to choose a hamper for WooiKuan's parents as a form of appreciation. The lousy shopping mall didn't have the wrapping services, we decided to wrap it ourselves. 12pm, we bought our lunch from the McDonald. Guess what? we bought happy meal.

After checked out from the apartment, we moved to a new hotel which we found yesterday's night. We wrapped the hamper together in the hotel until 3pm, then we went to the airport.

Well, after she have went into her flight, I came back to the hotel. Walked around in the Kota Kinabalu town as the hotel is right in the middle of the town. Ate some food there, then went into the room to rest due to sore throat.

At night, Wanru and Keesian came back from Labuan. We went out for supper together with Wooikuan and his parents.

We slept, before the midnight.

Rock on KK Town, we.

Day 5
11th Jan 2008

Woke up at 9am in the morning, surprise? We, 4 of us, Jun, Yi Yeung, KeeSian and I was awaken because of Jun's business call at 9. Yes 4 of us sleeping in a room while the 2 girls in another room. It was the tightest sleep we ever had in our life. We slept like newborn babies.

We decided to have breakfast at 10am, but because of some movies, we delayed it. 12pm, we went out to hunt for food, our brunch.

Went in to Warisan Shopping Mall to look for food. We found Kenny Roger at last, spent 1 hour eating while chatting so loudly there, laughing at KeeSian pose. Whenever he is in static position, he tends to make his legs L shape and put one of his arm on the wall, posy.

After lunch, we just walked around in the shopping complex, nothing much to see, nothing much to do.

At night, WooiKuan's parents fetched us to have some seafood dinner, then bring us to a place where we could see the Kota Kinabalu Town. Took a few pictures there, laughing at KeeSian cause of his posing again.

We were back to our apartment, and everyone slept early except me and Lynn, chatting till midnight.

Kind of boring day, but it was good so that we could rest after the climb.

KK Town night view. Nothing to see except cars and buildings.

Everyone doing Ultraman pose, because of some stupid emoticon from MSN.

Here it is, KeeSian's trademark pose. From left: Jun, YiYeung, WooiKuan, Lynn, Wanru, me, KeeSian the pro.

The Peak, The Horizon.

Day 4
10th Jan 2008

I ate 2 pieces of bread filled with tuna and drank a cup of hot milo as my early breakfast at 2am. Everyone in the hotel was awaken, prepared to continue their journey to the peak of Mount Kinabalu.

Today's task was to climb all the way up to the Low's Peak, the highest point of Mount kinabalu. Estimated time was 6am at the peak so that we could watch the sunrise. Before we started, we agreed that 6 of us will go up as a team since Veronica told us that the climbing was quite dangerous at this stage.

Well prepared, everyone was ready to go. I was so excited that I told them I want to lead and actually lead them to the wrong door. Who knows we have to go through the back door? Can't blame me. >.<

The first 700 meters was easy. The only obstacles that we met was rocks, rocks and rocks. We moved pretty slow as we have to wait for everyone in the team to get together. Veronica even said that we were moving like a 70 years old man. However, she told us that we have to make it to Sayat-sayat, which is 1km from where we were, by 5am to continue our climb. Determined to reach the peak, me and Lynn decided to move ahead faster.

After 700 meters of easy climbing, me and Lynn reached the danger area. In this 200 meters area, we have to grap the rope tight so that we could balance ourselves and not to fall down from the hill. This short distance of danger area was so tiring as we moved slowly and carefully.

Finally, we reached Sayat-sayat, at 4.52am. Our climbing permit was checked by the person in charge there, then we rested for another 10 minutes before we could continue. Surprisingly, Jun, Keesian and WooiKuan caught up with us while we were resting while Veronica and Wanru were still way behind us. Hence we continued to move up together.

Roughly half an hour later, Veronica appeared behind us and told us that Wanru has reached Sayat-sayat but due to the delay she couldn't continue with the climb.

The path in front wasn't so steep anymore that we could walk without holding the rope. However, the weather is getting colder and colder as we proceed. My fingers were freezing even with the gloves on. My lips were so numb that I couldn't speak a word there.

The sun has awaken, and morning has arrived. We could see the path without using torchlight anymore. We were walking at the stone path which is so wide that we couldn't see the end. No trees, no animals or any living things we could see. I somehow felt like I was walking in the middle of Sahara. I raised my head and looked forward. From far, I could see the peak. It was around 500 meters to go. But look at the steepness at the peak, I felt like I cannot make it there as I am already exhausted and need a rest. Somehow, the sunrise motivated me to go on.

Thought about the sunrise, I suddenly felt energitic, and I don't want to miss it as I already at this stage. I rushed forward, abundoned my friends and all, until the last 200 meters before the peak. I looked up once, to make sure I am in the correct direction, then starts using both my arms and legs to climb up the steepest slope of all. I forgot about the time, I forgot about the pain, I forgot about the tireness, I just want to see the sunrise.

The next moment I look up, I saw the signboard, written "Low's Peak, 4095.2m", I told myself, I made it, I made it, I made it.

Standing on the highest rock at the peak, I looked forward. I saw the horizon, right in front of me. When i look down, I saw the world. Looked at my left, I saw the sunrise. Ah I forgot about the sunrise until I saw it. However, I felt that the sunrise wasn't important anymore. The view at the peak is not just about the sunrise. I could see probably the best scene I can ever seen in my life, right there, at the peak. Words and photographs cannot describe anything I saw there.

It was just 6.30am in the morning. Half an hour later, they arrived at the peak as well. I was glad that I have spent 30 minutes more at the peak as I spent 30 minutes more at the most beautiful place, viewing the most amazing view for another 30 minutes. I wished I could stay there, but in fact, I was freezing cold.

Afraid to get frozed bite, we descend at 7.30am. Nothing much to talk about the descending, I just have to eat 2 more panadols to cope with the dizzyness again.

5pm, we reached Kota Kinabalu Park, our starting location. WooiKuan's parents already waiting there and after we have collected our certificates, we went Tuaran for food.

At night, we found an apartment to stay in KK town centre. All of us slept so tight this night, like a baby.

The sunrise at the Horizon.

Veronica taking our picture, while I took her picture.

5 of us.

Lynn and me, at the peak.

That's what you see when u look down.

Descending, I taking picture at the back.

Ops, I stayed too long. They are so far!

Me, obviously.

Is hard to climb up with this steepness.

My first step

day 3
9th Jan 2008

4am
I woke up, just can't fall asleep again. It's cold, dark, and the bed is so not comfortable. Turned to my left, Keesian has awaken too. All of us just getting too excited on what we are going to do later.

6am
Alright, everyone has to wake up now. Breakfast with instant noodles and sausages, some of us was doing warm up, some of us was still packing our bags. Jun got much better after 2 days of sleep. However he refused to carry his bag but putting everything in Yi Yeung's bag. Well, for him not carrying anything, we want him to carry our food. Another words, he is our food porter.

8am
We gathered at the entrance of the mountain. Wanru just informed us that our guide is a local lady named Veronica Benjamin. I wondered what Keesian heard when Wanru told us her name, he just kept calling her Victoria. Haha. 8.30am, our crazy journey begun.

Our mission of the day was to reach a place called Laban Rata. Laban Rata is 3300meters above sealevel and there are rooms for us to rest. Veronica told us that some of us might feel dizzy when we approaching 2500meters due to the high altitute. The whole journey from the entrance to Laban Rata is 6km long in total. Normally it takes 6 hours to reach there.

The first 2km was nothing much exciting. I had the same feeling when I was climbing Gasing Hill back in Petaling Jaya. After 2km of walking in the jungle, we were seperated. Me, Jun and Keesian were in the lead while the rest are fall behind us. In the second 2km, my legs was so tired that I have to rest once in a while. We have passed the 2500meters point and fortunately I have no breathing problem, just a little dizzy.

Jun is a great climber I supposed. He actually helped Yi Yeung to carry his bag and in the same time carry our food since Yi Yeung wasn't feeling well after 2500meters level. But that didn't slow him much, and in fact in the second 2km, he overtook me and walked up alone when I paused for a rest. Keesian was just right behind me, looking exhausted, just like me.

I met some caucasian and chatted with them while keeping myself going. Amazingly, for the last 2km, I felt refreshed. The air was getting thinner and thinner, the temperature was getting lower. I am forced to wear a jacket to continue my journey. I regained my energy by eating lots of chocolates and eggs. The board which indicates that there were just 2km left to Laban Rata inspired and motivated me to walk faster. At certain point, I walked pass Jun and continue going up without any rest.

Around 100 to 200 meters before I reached Laban Rata, it start to rain. And you know, when it's raining, the weather will get extremely cold. I know it will be tough if I soaks in the rain for too long, I rushed upwards regardless of tiredness. Finally, I reached Laban Rata. It was 1.30pm. Wow, I used just 5 hours to reach here.

In my imagination, Laban Rata is a flat ground in the middle of the mountain where a few hotels were build there. But in fact it is not. It is just a building built on the mountain. A wooden building, like an inn. When I first step into the inn, some people congratulated me for reaching this point. I was cold and exhausted. Dizzyness starts to attact my mind, my body as I finally relaxed. 9 degree celcius, was the only figure shown in the termometer reading.

Half an hour later, Jun rushed into the inn. He made it. He was wet like he was dancing in the rain. Drying himself in the inn, we found a table and ordered some food and drink. Hot food with warm drink, the best combo of the day. The food there was so expensive that each cup of milo cost RM6 and fried rice cost RM15. However we thought that was worth as we finally know how hard is it to carry things up to this level.

Another half an hour, Keesian arrived. Besides wet, he was just wet. In the same time, dizzyness starts to conquer my mind. I am forced to take 2 panadols and rest early in my room there. The last thing I saw in the inn was the termometer reading. It was 7 degree.

When I was on the bed, I saw Wooikuan, Wanru, Lynn, Yi Yeung, arrived one by one. Ah.. everyone made it. Lynn made a cup noodles for me as my dinner, then everyone went to rest early. Me, Wooikuan, Wanru and Lynn in one room, 3 of them in another room. All of us slept in full armed winter gear due to the low temperature.

Our next mission is to start climbing at 2.30am the next day and all the way till the peak of Mount Kinabalu, the Low's Peak. "If this peak is low one, then where is the High's Peak?" I asked my friends before. The answer is, 'Low' is actually someone's initial. It is already the highest peak in Mount Kinabalu. So it is called Low's Peak. Confusing.

At around 9 to 10pm, my headache and dizzyness were back. I couldn't sleep well and all. Suddenly, Jun came in with Keesian, they told us another bad news: Yi Yeung gave up on tomorrow's climb due to hard breathing problem; Jun himself got dizzyness and headache like me; and Keesian said he has reached his limit. They woke us up, Wanru and Lynn both felt demoralised as they were exhauseted too. I was once thinking that I should stay in Laban Rata with Yeung together.

Couldn't sleep, frustration and disappointment were our only feeling. We started to chat to each other in the small room. Jun suggested that I eat another 2 panadols and stop sleeping. I followed, it didn't turn too well but at least I could talk to them.

1am approaching. There was only 1 hour left to decide whether we should continue. Well after some discussion, we decided to attempt it. Yeung's the only one giving up totally. The rest of us, we are prepared, regardless to our physical and mental conditions.

Can we do it?

Mount Kinabalu from the entrance.

I love squirrel and obviously squirrel loves me too.

Keesian is the one at the right.

Camwhore once I have reached the inn. You noticed I love NUS right?

Jun's here too!

Welcome to Sabah

Day 2
7th Jan 2008

"Dummchhh dummchhh dummchh dumhh ...."
"Snooooooorrrrr.......snooooorrrr....."
"Crock! Crockkk! Crock! croc..."

5.30am in the morning. Do you think we could sleep well under such noises? Well the only one slept well was Jun, and he has proudly contributed to one of these annoying noises.

Everyone was awaken at 5.30 in the morning, including Jun. Went toilet together to brush our milky white teeth and wash our even milk-ier face. Checked in our luggage to the cargo, we went MarryBrown for breakfast. For a person who doesn't eat breakfast at all like me, I ordered just a cup of milo. We sat at one corner of MB where the 'chairs' are actually swings. 4 of them occupied a full table and left me and Lynn in another table beside them.

7am, time to check in.

Whoalaa...I bet this was the first time I travelled with AirAsia. Was surprise that the plane actually looks good and seat and all. Each row of seats consisting only 6 seats, what a huge bus. Well, we couldn't walk into the plane directly but have to walk a short distance on the plateform. The bus was comfortable, there was so many empty seat that some of us spreaded out to get a better view outside the windows.

Ops, did I say bus? It was a plane.

Reached our destination at around 10am. Wooikuan took 1 hour to reach the Kota Kinabalu Airport and took another half an hour to fetch us to the town, Kota Kinabalu.

Now that we know why Wooikuan love to get home. The mountain and the seaside scenic was just so marvelous. It made us felt like we are in a different place, like the Hawaii Island. Looking up we couldn't see the peak of the mountains as the cloud covered it like a white-chocalote-coated-doughnut. Looking sideway we met the colourful sea, like a paint drawn by just pouring deep blue, light blue and greenish blue or bluish green colour on it. Above the sealevel was the bright sun, forcing himself to shine so brightly to make sure every single inches of the Earth's surface has its colour. It was hot, just hot. As hot as any girl I have seen before.

We went shopping in Centre Point. I felt stupid to be so prepared for this trip as almost all of my friends, didn't even has a proper climbing shoes. Finally, they found some local made rubber climbing shoes with just RM5.50.

After shopping and lunch, Wooikuan's parents fetched us to the Kota Kinabalu Park where the entrance to Mount kinabalu is. Yi Yueng, Wooikuan and Jun have to take bus there themselves as the Unser cannot fit all 9 people with all our luggage.

Kota Kinabalu Park is actually 1800meters above sealevel. It is the entrance to climb Mount Kinabalu. The weather there is almost like the weather in Genting, cold and windy. However to suit myself with the even cold-er weather later, I just wore a thin jersey and sport shorts to walk around there. We went dinner, then bought some food from the nearby supermarket, and went back to our hotel.

Nothing much to talk about Kota Kinabalu Park beside cold and colder. All of us are forced to sleep at 10pm to prepare for the climb the next morning.

Light off at 10pm.

Shit
Jun's snoring again.

View from the Airbus: Sungai Rajang, longest river in Asia? or SEA?

Violaceous Sabah.

Day 1
6th Jan 2008

Well well, nothing much to talk about today. We met at Kranji MRT station at 8pm supposingly. As usual, the late-king Jun's late again, but he was forgiven since he had high fever. We travelled from Kranji to Woodland Custam at 8.35pm, the craziest journey has begun.

Check-in and check-out, walked up and down. Finally we have reached Kotaraya of Johore. Had some games and food there while waiting for the arrival of the bus to the Senai Airport, I introduced the mee goreng from Malaysia to our beloved Singaporean, Kee Sian and Yi Yeung.

Hold on, forgot to introduce everyone here. Our group consists of 7 students, 7 crazy minded, and the combination of us is just, crazy. First of all, me. As you know I can be seriously funny and seriously joker when I am with friends. Then, my ex-chs classmates, Wanru and Lynn. Can't find any words to describe them (yea you know, girls are complicated). They are just cool. Then is the 2 singaporean, they just know nothing about nothing but fun. Lastly, one Ipoh-an and one Kinabalu-an. The late-king was the Ipoh-an, Jun and Wooikuan the sabah-an. Haha.

Back to my story.

We reached Senai Airport, Johore at 11.30pm. First thing we did was to find a place to sleep. At last we found a long bench which we can make it our bed. We played card games while the fever-late-king already fall asleep with his book on his face. Well well, we all felt asleep at 2am. Left Lynn alone playing with her iPod. That's the crazy first day, Sleeping in the Airport.

From the left: Jun, Yeung, Keesian, Lynn, Wanru. (I was holding camera, Wooikuan was already in Sabah)

That's our bed at Senai Airport. Saw the book at the leftmost chair? That's the book Jun used to cover his face while sleeping. Look at the position of the chair in front of me relative to the rest, it proves that I am very short.
