Day 4
10th Jan 2008
I ate 2 pieces of bread filled with tuna and drank a cup of hot milo as my early breakfast at 2am. Everyone in the hotel was awaken, prepared to continue their journey to the peak of Mount Kinabalu.
Today's task was to climb all the way up to the Low's Peak, the highest point of Mount kinabalu. Estimated time was 6am at the peak so that we could watch the sunrise. Before we started, we agreed that 6 of us will go up as a team since Veronica told us that the climbing was quite dangerous at this stage.
Well prepared, everyone was ready to go. I was so excited that I told them I want to lead and actually lead them to the wrong door. Who knows we have to go through the back door? Can't blame me. >.<
The first 700 meters was easy. The only obstacles that we met was rocks, rocks and rocks. We moved pretty slow as we have to wait for everyone in the team to get together. Veronica even said that we were moving like a 70 years old man. However, she told us that we have to make it to Sayat-sayat, which is 1km from where we were, by 5am to continue our climb. Determined to reach the peak, me and Lynn decided to move ahead faster.
After 700 meters of easy climbing, me and Lynn reached the danger area. In this 200 meters area, we have to grap the rope tight so that we could balance ourselves and not to fall down from the hill. This short distance of danger area was so tiring as we moved slowly and carefully.
Finally, we reached Sayat-sayat, at 4.52am. Our climbing permit was checked by the person in charge there, then we rested for another 10 minutes before we could continue. Surprisingly, Jun, Keesian and WooiKuan caught up with us while we were resting while Veronica and Wanru were still way behind us. Hence we continued to move up together.
Roughly half an hour later, Veronica appeared behind us and told us that Wanru has reached Sayat-sayat but due to the delay she couldn't continue with the climb.
The path in front wasn't so steep anymore that we could walk without holding the rope. However, the weather is getting colder and colder as we proceed. My fingers were freezing even with the gloves on. My lips were so numb that I couldn't speak a word there.
The sun has awaken, and morning has arrived. We could see the path without using torchlight anymore. We were walking at the stone path which is so wide that we couldn't see the end. No trees, no animals or any living things we could see. I somehow felt like I was walking in the middle of Sahara. I raised my head and looked forward. From far, I could see the peak. It was around 500 meters to go. But look at the steepness at the peak, I felt like I cannot make it there as I am already exhausted and need a rest. Somehow, the sunrise motivated me to go on.
Thought about the sunrise, I suddenly felt energitic, and I don't want to miss it as I already at this stage. I rushed forward, abundoned my friends and all, until the last 200 meters before the peak. I looked up once, to make sure I am in the correct direction, then starts using both my arms and legs to climb up the steepest slope of all. I forgot about the time, I forgot about the pain, I forgot about the tireness, I just want to see the sunrise.
The next moment I look up, I saw the signboard, written "Low's Peak, 4095.2m", I told myself, I made it, I made it, I made it.
Standing on the highest rock at the peak, I looked forward. I saw the horizon, right in front of me. When i look down, I saw the world. Looked at my left, I saw the sunrise. Ah I forgot about the sunrise until I saw it. However, I felt that the sunrise wasn't important anymore. The view at the peak is not just about the sunrise. I could see probably the best scene I can ever seen in my life, right there, at the peak. Words and photographs cannot describe anything I saw there.
It was just 6.30am in the morning. Half an hour later, they arrived at the peak as well. I was glad that I have spent 30 minutes more at the peak as I spent 30 minutes more at the most beautiful place, viewing the most amazing view for another 30 minutes. I wished I could stay there, but in fact, I was freezing cold.
Afraid to get frozed bite, we descend at 7.30am. Nothing much to talk about the descending, I just have to eat 2 more panadols to cope with the dizzyness again.
5pm, we reached Kota Kinabalu Park, our starting location. WooiKuan's parents already waiting there and after we have collected our certificates, we went Tuaran for food.
At night, we found an apartment to stay in KK town centre. All of us slept so tight this night, like a baby.

The sunrise at the Horizon.

Veronica taking our picture, while I took her picture.

5 of us.
Lynn and me, at the peak.

That's what you see when u look down.

Descending, I taking picture at the back.

Ops, I stayed too long. They are so far!

Me, obviously.

Is hard to climb up with this steepness.
